News Release

Mayor and City Council Take Action to Protect Moreno Valley Utility Customers from Rate Increase During Covid-19 Crisis

For immediate release: April 7 2020

Now is not the time to raise electric utility rates. That's the message Moreno Valley Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez and the City Council want to send to residents.

As part of its legal responsibility, the City-owned Moreno Valley Utility (MVU) is required to make sure its electricity rates keep pace with Southern California Edison rates. So a legally required resolution to do that was part of the City Council's April 7 agenda. The Council rejected the resolution out of hand, saying that now, when so many residents and businesses are struggling financially, is not the time to increase rates.

"Raising utility rates is the last thing we would even consider right now," explained Mayor Gutierrez. "We need our residents to know that we are working day and night to ease their burden as much as possible in these uncertain times."

The City of Moreno Valley’s Disaster Council, which is led by the Mayor, recently took action to suspend late fees, disconnections and any rate increases for MVU customers during this crisis.

MVU serves approximately 6,100 residential and commercial customers in Moreno Valley; Southern California Edison provides power to the majority, approximately 50,000 customers.
